Samuel Etoo Football Manager! The ex-Barcelona player, now 34, has been installed as the interim boss of Turkish side Antalyaspor reports football betting tips site FC Bodog.
The ageing striker – who has been collecting some fat signing on fees (and even fatter wages) for the past five years – has been playing for the Turkish side since last summer – when he penned a three-year deal.
Does Etoo have what it takes to land the job on a full time basis? The Cameroonian player has shown little appetite as player ever since he left Inter Milan in 2011 and it remains to be seen if he has the powers of motivation to improve the form of a side that currently sits in ninth position of the Turkish Super Lig.
At the time he left Inter – and arguably still in his prime – there was strong interest from the Premier League but he instead chose roubles above playing quality and opted for Russian backwater outfit Anzi Makhachkala. His game stagnated against low-quality opposition every week and his years in Russia are viewed by many as a waste of his considerable talents.
Etoo was eventually persuaded to move to the Premier League in 2013 where a deal was thrashed out with Russian owned Chelsea but it was clear from many of his displays that he had become a pale shadow of the player who bewitched some of the best defenders in the world during his earlier years. The four-time African Footballer of the Year managed just 21 games for the Blues.
He left Stamford Bridge after a year to join Everton but was clearly unsuited by life in Merseyside. The two-year deal lasted just six months before moving to Genoese side Sampdoria. But that two-and-a-half year deal lasted less than five months.
It is understood that Etoo has three matches to prove his worth as a manager and if he impresses he will be given the job during Turkey’s winter break. He picks up the managerial baton from Yusuf Simsek who resigned on December 7.
Former Camerron team mate Patrick M’boma shared the surprise of many that Etoo has gone into management at the age of 34.
“I know it was in his plans to be a manager, he told me many years ago. But from what I know he has no experience. I hope he will be a good manager but I do not know.
“He has the personality and the knowledge, but I am not sure he will have the patience. If he can improve on the areas where he is weak he could be a success.”
