Will Ferrell MLS Co-Owner! The US comedy actor is now a paid up member of the “beautiful game” after making a significant investment in new Major League Soccer franchise Los Angeles FC.

Ferrell was officially named as a co-owner of the new franchise on Thursday. Ferrell, now 48, is part of a 26-person ownership group. Fellow co-owners include NBA legend Magic Johnson, Tony Robbins, YouTube founder Chad Hurley and former USA women’s soccer attacker Mia Hamm.

Another familiar name involved is Cardiff City chairman Vincent Tan. The Malaysian has been tipped to get involved in Stateside soccer for some time.

Ferrell joked: “I want in. I’ve never been a part-owner of anything. Although I’m still part-owner of an 84 Toyota Camry with my brother.

“This is not a joke. I’m actually a member of this fine ownership group and it’s very exciting,” he said.

Ferrell is one of Hollywood’s most famous faces. He’s starred in films such as Anchorman, Elf and Talladega Nights.

The ownership group is headed by venture capitalist Henry Nguyen, entrepreneur Peter Guber and ex-NBA executive Tom Penn

Los Angeles FC will enter the MLS from 2018 and will provide with football fans in the City of Angels with another alternative to LA Galaxy.

The club will build Los Angeles’ first open-air stadium since 1962 with work expected to start later this year.

Ferrell said football is very much a family tradition for him. His three sons play the game and his wife represented Pomona College.

The Portland Timbers are the reigning MLS champions.

Managing partner Henry Nguyen said that the 26-person consortium may seem large and “cumbersome” but that the high number of individuals would have its benefits.

“It’s a joy to have such a collection of incredibly successful, experienced, talented people contributing their ideas.

LAFC will play in a purpose-built 22,000-seat stadium in the south of the city beside the LA Colisieum.

Nguyen said the club’s black, gold and red colours and crest are a major part of the club’s desire to create an internationally known brand.

“The wing is such a special symbol of what this city is, in terms of meaning, flight, dynamism. This is the City of Angels. And it’s every type of wing. It’s an Aztec eagle wing. It’s a dragon wing. It’s an angel wing. It’s whatever wing you want it to be.”

Can LAFC become a major force in MLS? In a city of more than 18 million people there’s certainly potential for them to pull in capacity crowds to their new stadium.
