Is Mario Gotze better than Lionel Messi? Of course he isn’t, but with a moment of magic in the 113th minute of Germany’s World Cup final with Argentina we all saw that this is a player who is ready to challenge the likes of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo for the title of the world’s greatest player.
Scoring the winning goal in a final of such magnitude has safely secured the 22-year-old legendary status among followers of the Mannschaft and it would be no surprise to see this German side dominate international football for many years to come.
That means this could well be the first of two or possibly even three World Cup titles for the Bayern Munich star, and that’s something that even the mercurial Messi will be able to match.
Shortly before sending Gotze on as a second half substitute Germany coach Joachim Low told him to show the world he was a better player than Messi.
And as he controlled Andre Schurrle’s cross on his chest before expertly clipping past Argentine keeper Sergio Romero to make history Gotze certainly achieved something that maybe Messi probably never will – score the goal that wins a World Cup.
And at just 22 years of age there is a possibility that the former Borussia Dortmund man could easily feature as far into the future as the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Low confessed that he said to Gotze before he sent him on: “Show them that you are better (than Messi) and can decide the World Cup. Gotze is the miracle boy.
And quite rightly Low raved about his player to the media afterwards: “He is the wonder who can play in numerous positions, he is the decider who can come on and make a difference and that is what he did.”
Gotze transferred to Bayern from Borussia Dortmund for $55 million and it has not been lost on the football tipping team at FC Bodog that the Bavarian giants will now be in even more confident mood ahead of their Champions League campaign.
Those Bayern Munich odds of 5.50 look a fine bet right now. Messi has won the Champions League three times with Barcelona so that question – Is Mario Gotze better than Lionel Messi – can be answered very much in the Argentine star’s favour right now.
However, we can see Bayern Munich, with players such as Thomas Muller, Bastian Schweinsteiger, Manuel Neuer, Toni Kroos, Philipp Lahm and Julian Draxler dominating European club football for the forseable future.
For us Messi, despite being clearly fatigued at this World Cup, is still the best right now. And just imagine how good he might be made to look and honours he might win playing with some of those names above.
But we saw a glimpse into the future of football with Gotze’s moment of magic in the Maracana and answers to that question of – Is Mario Gotze better than Lionel Messi? – may well swing in favour of Germany’s boy wonder sooner rather than later.
