Manchester United shouldn’t have a problem beating Middlesbrough and advancing to the next round of the Capital One Cup. Any other result will be a failure for manager Louis Van Gaal and company. United and Boro meet this Wednesday, October 28 at 22:00, at the Round of 16 at Old Trafford.
Man Utd have failed to win over their last two matches, drawing to CSKA Moscow last week during their Champions League visit to Russia. But also missing a great opportunity in the English Premier League, by drawing scoreless at home against Manchester City, during the weekend.
One victory over their last four matches, if counting their 0-3 disaster against Arsenal, is what Man Utd have showed over the last month or so. However, their Capital One meeting against Middlesbrough doesn’t have much room for an upset.
“It is one of the top clubs in the Championship, so it is not so easy. I am very happy with the result. I am happy we are playing at home. We are travelling a lot, so it is good to stay at home”, Van Gaal said previous the game.
The League Cup Betting Odds made the Red Devils the big favorites to win and advance, with their victory valued at 1.44 while Middlesbrough’s potential upset is at 8.0, and the draw is at 4.75.
United’s only game at the 2015-16 Capital One Cup was an easy 3-0 victory over Ipswich Town back on September. Middlesbrough, on the contrary, have played three Capital One Cup matchups already, beating Oldham (1-3), Burton Albion (1-2 ET) and the Wolves (3-0) to get to this point.
Boro’s current form is an issue. They beat the Wolves (1-3) during the weekend, but before that they had three games without a win, losing two Cardiff City (1-0) and Reading (2-0) while drawing against Fulham (0-0) in that span.
“In all my time here we haven’t had a lot of injuries, but we have been missing Stuani, and we now have Albert as well with his ankle. I don’t know how he will be for Wednesday. Adam Forshaw has also picked up an injury as well. We will have to wait and see over the next few days”, explained manager Aitor Karanka about his team’s status.
As part of the Man Utd League Cup Tips Middlesbrough keep in mind these two clubs met for the last time in 2009. United have three consecutive wins in the series, two of them by a two goals differential. The last time Boro beat the Red Devils was back in the 2005-06 season, when both were playing at the EPL; there have been ten games since that upset, with United winning six of those ten.
The handicap has Man United -1 at 2.05. Taking slightly more risk, the betting odds find Van Gaal’s team at -2 paying 3.75. Middlesbrough’s +1 is valued at 2.8.
Van Gaal’s side needs a win after two consecutive matches. It doesn’t matter if is against and an undervalued team like Middlesbrough. Take them to win by two scores and play United on the handicap.
